America Gets Homeland Security
Less than one month after the September 11 terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush announces the establishment of the Office of Homeland Security. It would become one of the largest components of the federal government, charged with preventing terror attacks, border security, disaster relief and more. Congress officially voted to make the office a cabinet-level department the following year, which meant that it would absorb 22 different agencies, including the Secret Service.
