The assailant, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired eight rounds from an AR-15-style rifle, striking Trump in the upper right ear. One audience member was killed, and two others were critically injured before Crooks was shot and killed by Secret Service agents. Trump was treated at a local hospital and released the same day. He appeared two days later at the Republican National Convention, where he was seen with a bandage on his ear.
