Eric Garner was killed after being placed in a prohibited chokehold by officer Daniel Pantaleo. Garner repeated 11 times “I Can’t Breathe.” His cries were ignored by Pantaleo. Months later, a grand jury decided not to indict Pantaleo, resulting in a series of protests erupting around the country. Since his death, the phrase “I Can’t Breathe” has become interwoven with protests against police brutality.
