Kalief Browder Takes His Life

When he was 16, Kalief Browder was detained at the Rikers Island jail after being arrested and accused of stealing a backpack. He was held without trial for three years and spent two of those years in solitary confinement. Two years after his release, Kalief committed suicide in his mother's home at the age of 22. He had previously attempted suicide several times during the time he was imprisoned.
